Every year, the German Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI), together with the Swiss Informatics Society (SI) and the Austrian Computer Society (OCG), award a prize for an excellent PhD dissertation.
The dissertation must be in the field of Informatics. This includes not only work that represents an advance in Informatics/Computer Science, but also work from applications of Informatics in other disciplines and work that concerns the interactions between Informatics and society.
Objective
The objective of the participating associations is to highlight particularly important work done by young scientists and to be able to contribute to the transfer of knowledge from universities to technology, business and society.
Prize Money
The dissertation prize is endowed with € 5'000.
Submission and Selection Procedure
Nominations for the dissertation award can submitted by all universities in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland who have the right to award doctorates in the field of Informatics. The nominated dissertations are presented by the candidates at a colloquium. The award committee then selects the winner.
Award Ceremony and Announcement
The award ceremony takes place at the annual meeting of the Gesellschaft für Informatik, the ‘INFORMATIK 20XX’.
Publication
Summaries of the presented dissertations are published in an anthology entitled “Excellent Informatics Dissertations”. The award-winning work is particularly honored in the introduction to that book.
